Persian Gulf

Persian Gulf

Persian Gulf also called “Khalij-e Fars” is a shallow marginal sea of the Indian Ocean that lies between the Arabian Peninsula and southwestern Iran. This majestic gulf in Iranian shore is mountainous, and there often are cliffs. However, it does not stop Iran to have quite a number of ports in the Persian Gulf region from which we want to highlight three including Lengeh, Khamir and Abbas.

Bandar Lengeh was the first port we visited, and we thought it can be the last as we wanted to take a ferry from there to Dubai after visiting the south of Iran. We believe it is a sleepy port with big history, however, people do not come here unless they are taking a ferry to Dubai or a boat to Qeshm island.

Bandar Khamir was our second port town to visit and we found it much livelier. Of course, we had a lovely host who showed us around. The city has huge Arabic style mosque, nice swamp is nearby and astonishing sulfur waterfalls not far to the direction of Bandar Abbas.

Bandar Abbas is the capital of ports in Iran from there you can get a boat or ferry to most of the places around with an ease. This port also acts as a trade, export and import center as it is strategically positioned overlooking the Strait of Hormoz and the entrance to the Persian Gulf. Even though there is not much to see in the city, it is clearly not just a transit point to get to Qeshm or Hormoz islands. It is a lively city with a great bazaar, an appealing fish market and plenty of atmosphere.

Helpful tips

Markets. In all three port towns you will have a chance to buy souvenirs. Prices in grocery shops are similar as in all country.

Transportation. To get to Bandar Lengeh and Abbas you can use car, bus, train or plane which ever you think is more convenient for you. While Bandar Khamir does not have an airport nearby. We hitchhiked and it was super easy as all of ports are on main country roads, there is a lot of traffic.

To get around the ports is best on foot or with a car, sometimes taxi might be a quick option as well. However, if you live near center it is best to do it on foot!

Best of luck planning your holidays in Iran!
