Yeghegis

Yeghegis

Yeghegis is a town in the Vayots Dzor Province of Armenia. It has rich historical past, with medieval Tsakhats Kar Monastery and Smbataberd fortress located in the vicinity of Yeghegis. The name of the town originated from the Armenian word yeghegn which means reed. And you can witness it by the moment you enter the valley. Other than surrounding landscape with outstanding amount of rocks and mountain tops, the valley is green and lively.

The beautiful Yeghegis Valley is in between high peaks and is also home to many picturesque villages with medieval churches. On top of one of the towering peaks stands Smbataberd fortress which we found particularly interesting. We did a hike to reach the top and went back. However, we suggest exploring surrounding valleys as well. Plan a trip to here for a day or two. Even though we read that this region it is home to many frequently encountered venomous snakes, we did not meet any.

Transportation. To get to Yeghegis you can use car, bus or a taxi whichever you think is more convenient. The place is away from all the major roads, so here is not so much traffic. However, we managed to hitchhike here just fine and without any issues. The locals are helpful and friendly.

To get around the best way is to go hiking, sometimes taxi might be a quick option as well. However, if you come here for stunning scenery it is best to do it on foot!
