Sreemangal

Sreemangal

Sreemangal the star of the North-eastern part of the country. When Sylhet may be the primary city and the capital of the region, Sreemangal together with its surroundings outshines it and attracts majority of travelers. Without a doubt it is a city which is blessed with rolling hills overlaid with endless tea plantations, tribal villages and dense forests sanctuaries. This ranks Sreemangal among the most treasured adventures you can experience in Bangladesh!

Sreemangal town is quite small and does not have a lot to offer, however, it is the surroundings which counts. Close by there is an amazing tribal village “Ramnagar” with magical atmosphere and warm and welcoming people living inside. While here wander through tea fields, visit locals and hike to nearby towns while experiencing wildlife-watching. Once you are done – do not forget to drink the tea of Sreemangal! It is a must!

Helpful tips

Restaurants. There are multiple places in the city where you can find descent food. In most of the local restaurants you will find price and quality ration alright. Stop by and try local food in street markets, look for a cleaner place and enjoy!

There is one place which we found particularly amazing – “Kutum Bari”! Enjoyed dinner here for couple nights in a row. It serves Bengali and Indian cuisine.

Also, you must try traditional 7-layer tea in “Neelkantha Tea Cabin”. One of the musts to do here inside the city center.

Markets. In Sreemangal as in almost every other city in Bangladesh you will not find a lot of cheap souvenirs to put on your fridge. However, you can get something what locals are making on spot and that is much more interesting if you ask us! In our opinion the most interesting is Bangladeshi rich arts and crafts tradition. Search for things made by locals from wood, leather, copper or most importantly cotton and silks.

Transportation. To get to Sreemangal you can use car, bus, or train. In order to get there, we hitchhiked and it went well. Either way you choose, be prepared that it will take some time, slowdown, relax and enjoy the trip not the destination.

Sreemangal is quite a small city, thus, inside it is possible to get around by food. If you do not like walking as we did, you can always grab a Tuk Tuk. However, to go explore the tea fields, you might need a car or a Tuk Tuk, as the distance between the village and the recommended to visit plantations vary from couple kilometers to tens of kilometers. Take in mind that it is not compulsory to take a car or Tuk Tuk and you can enjoy the tea fields and everything around on bike or foot like we did.

Best of luck planning your holidays in Bangladesh!
