Uthai Thani
Uthai Thani is a small town in lower north of Thailand between Bangkok and Chiang Mai. A destination not so often visited by hordes of tourists and yet very attractive. Temples here are just marvelous! To some you need to climb close to 450 steps and some are accessible only for certain hours of the day. Thus, it is better to plan before you get here! The destination which is a must see if you ask us and lack of tourists just makes it more attractive.
Helpful tips
Restaurants. There are multiple places in the city where you can find descent food. In most of the local restaurants you will find price and quality ratio alright and food fresh, especially fish. In many restaurants they even have aquariums where you can choose food. Stop by and try local food in street markets, look for a cleaner place and enjoy!
Markets. In Uthai Thani as in almost every other city in Thailand you will easily find a lot of cheap souvenirs to put on your fridge. Local markets will charge you less the less you look like a tourist and if you know some simple Thai phrases, that will melt their hearts away. In shops all over city prices vary around same level, thus, choose a more convenient for you. Tesco Lotus accepts card payment, even if you do not spend 300 baths as in every other shop like for instance 7/11. We found it particularly convenient when you just need something like a water bottle or some snacks.
Transportation. To get to Uthai Thani you can use car, bus or train. Keep in mind that it is not a destination often visited by many tourists. We traveled to Uthai Thani using hitchhiking from Ayutthaya. It was relatively easy, although, we changed many cars and that increased the overall time of hitchhiking. Left Ayutthaya around 11 AM, after couple hours successfully reached our target around 2 PM and checked in Uthai Thani. Either way you choose, be aware that infrastructure is quite developed, roads are huge with many lines and there is a lot of traffic. Do not forget to also enjoy the trip not only the destination.
Inside the city you will find yourself using local Tuk Tuk’s, bikes which are one of the most convenient transportation devices used to get around. However, be aware that it is quite a hustle to wander around explore without some sort of transportation device. In our case we hitchhiked and were able to cover most important places for us in different sides of the city with ease.
Best of luck planning your holidays in Thailand!
