Trabzon
Trabzon – a lovely city on the Black Sea coast and biggest one in the northeast region. Due to the rainy climate even in the summer months, it has lots of green forests and mountains with many rivers and highlands.
City is proud to have a church built in the 13th century - Hagia Sophia. During its lifetime it has served as a hospital and a museum, but today is a mosque with restored ceiling frescoes. Also, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk residence from which you have a spectacular view into Black Sea coast.
Trabzon is also famous for its fish and the Sumela Monastery which is nearby. Sumela Monastery is a Greek Orthodox monastery built in the mountain. It was dedicated to the Virgin Mary at Melá Mountain within the Pontic Mountains range.
Helpful tips
Markets. In Trabzon as in every other location on the world enjoyed by tourists you will have a chance to buy overpriced souvenirs. Here prices in shops and markets are similar and you should use more convenient one for you.
In northeast of Turkey you should not drink from tap as locals suggest against it. However, in case you are not sure, just double check this with them directly.
Transportation. To get to Trabzon you can use car, bus, train or plane which ever you find more convenient for you. And in order to get around the city best is to use a car or local minibus. Whole city is on a steep mountain, thus, making it uncomfortable to get around on foot. Also, taxies could be a quick option as well.
There are major roads connecting Trabzon to other cities, a big harbor for international shipping traffic in the Black Sea, and an international airport.
