Shipka
Shipka – a small village north from Kazanluk is famous for its Memorial church – a monument dedicated to the bravery of the Russian and Bulgarian defenders of the Shipka pass in the War of Liberation in 1877-1878. A magnificent, glittering building tucked into this tiny Bulgarian town.
We came here after our host in Stara Zagora strictly insisted that we must visit this place and we were happy to comply! If you consider staying In this town longer than few hours there are many mountain trails around which you can trek.
What is more, we highly recommend considering visiting nearby standing Monument to Freedom on Stoletov peak and Buzludzha monument on the way to or from Kazanluk. The monuments and the views from up the mountains are something extraordinary!
Helpful tips
Markets. In Shipka as in every other location on the world enjoyed by tourists you will have a chance to buy overpriced souvenirs. The prices in the shops are similar depending on the size of the shop, but the difference is not huge, thus we encourage to save time and choose the closest shop which has what you need.
In central Bulgaria you should not drink water from tap as we were advised against it. However, Shipka is in the mountains and they have plenty of springs, thus, water should be safe to drink. In case you disagree, just double check this with locals when you are there.
Transportation. To get to Shipka you can use car or bus which ever you think is more convenient for you. Best way to get around the city is with your car. However, if you do not own one, it is doable with foot as it is a small village and we walked through it easily. View around here is unique and beautiful so we recommend foot!
